40% of food produced in the United States is wasted. There is no federal law on expiration dates, which allows different states to have different expiration dates on their food. In Montana, the milk must be sold within 12 days of pasteurization. If not sold, it must be thrown away. Not, donated, not given away, just dumped down a drain. There is no scientific reasoning behind this 12 day expiration date, but it is causing so much milk to be wasted. This is just a small example of how much food is being wasted in the United States. It is truly a big problem and it needs to be fixed. There are so many people dying from starvation every year, yet people are just throwing food out like its no big deal. We need to start putting regulations on things like expiration dates and wasting food because it could really make a difference.
